Philips

Based on Philips new concept of sound and image to simulate cinema at the conmfort at our own home, I was asked to project new products that helped to enhance the viewing experience. I tried to put this in another context and thought of products of daily use where we could apply this concept. Philips has already reached a very high level of sound and image technology,now it is time to extend this into other kinds of products.

This is an urban chair, inspired in one of the most famous boats in Portugal, the one that carries the Port wine barrels through the river - the Rabelo Boat.

As you can see in the photograph, this boat has a very strong image, especially when you focus in its side endinds that seem like arabic shoes. This structure had some good angles to explore, and I imediately imagined some kind of chair/sculpture to invade Oporto’s squares and sidewalks. Some kind of collective chair where you could seat on all the sides and even relax your back and sight see.

Língua de Gato

This project was realized during a Sustainable Design Workshop, in groups of 3 students. It was integrated in a biggerportuguese project which is still running today.

The main objective was to renew the northen coast beaches of the country,

starting from the quality of the water and ending with new designed structures like

restaurants, life guard towers, rest rooms,...Our job was was to think about children

and family distractions during the Summer season, and we were asked to design “playgrounds in the beach”. As nowadays all playgrounds have specific games to play, because the structures are very conditioning, we tried to innovate the concept of a playground and turn it into an organic form based on a typical portuguese biscuit called “língua de gato” (cat’s tongue). This combination of the same form in different positions is the perfect way to have various kinds of structures to play, that wouldn’t restrict the imagination. The kids can imagine their own games and stories and all the family can play.

Algae

The universal bath time combines nothing more than the human being and water.

Nowadays is already easy to listen to music while you are taking your quick shower. Or,you can also relax your body and mind while you are underwater, being surrounded by differet kinds of lights and sounds that make your bath experience a meditation time.

The goal here is to deal with water in an unusual way. For me, a liquid dream is something that you have never experienced before. Something that makes you wonder about it, and makes you desire more.

Dreaming is relaxing, but can also be unexpected and exciting. Is there anyone who has never woken up of a weird dream experience?

Algae is projected to provide you the new experience of desiring water. Taste is one of our five senses, and between sight, smell,touch and listening, this may be the most related to desire.

Most of the times, if you smell something youlike, your mind tells you that you have to taste it. The idea is to combine this new experience with hydrotherapy. Hydrotherapy is the use of water to relax or heal. The main way it achieves this by cooling or heating your body wich results are improving circulation, increasing the flow of nutrients and carrying away wastes from tissues and organs. It can relieve tension and relax the muscles.

This structure of many water curtains, based on the sea algae, gives the user the oportunity to walk under them and feel different temperatures. Most of the curtains are hot water, but there are a few cold ones that smell and taste like mint. This turns the wierd sensation of different temperatures on desire to feel and taste something tricky.

As people usually don’t like to get cold while they are bathing, this should be a funny way to do it.
